Cloning portions of an image

Use the Rubber Stamp tool to duplicate areas of a bitmap image. When you clone an area, two pointers appear. The blue circle indicates the area you want to clone (the source), and the rubber stamp pointer indicates where you want to place the cloned area.

Cloning is useful when you want to fix a scratched photograph. Simply duplicate areas of the photo and place the cloned area over the scratch.

Rubber Stamp pointers

To clone portions of a bitmap image:

1 Click the Rubber Stamp tool.
2 In the tool Options panel, choose a Source option:
Fixed locks the source pointer (the blue circle) to a specific area of the image so you can duplicate the area more than once.
The stamp pointer moves independently of the circular source pointer.
Aligned unlocks the source pointer so you can duplicate different areas of the image.
The two pointers move together.
3 Choose a Sample option:
Image lets you clone from the selected image only.
Document allows you to clone any area of the document, including any existing path objects.
4 In the Stamp Size pop-up menu, drag the slider to set the size of the Rubber Stamp.
5 In the Edge Softness preview, drag the slider to adjust the softness of the Rubber Stamp tool's edge.
6 Move the pointer to the area you want to clone, and click the mouse button.
7 Move the Rubber Stamp pointer to the area where you want to place the clone, and click the mouse button.

Note: To reposition the source pointer, hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Macintosh) while clicking with the Rubber Stamp tool.
